This the rock garden at Ryoanji temple. Apparently there are fourteen rocks but no matter where you are sitting or standing you can only ever see thirteen at a time. The idea is that if you're really Zen you can visualize the fourteenth rock. I'm not sure if I got the numbers wrong but I'm pretty sure I kept counting fourteen from every place I was sitting. Then again, some rocks may have looked like they were two but were really just one funky shaped rock.
This is the moss garden right next to the rock garden. I'm not actually sure if it's called the moss garden or if there's any significance to it like the rock garden but it was really pretty.
Turtles are everywhere in Japan. Including on the menu. So I've heard. I can't actually read the menus yet. No, that's not true I can read the menus I just don't know what the words I read mean.
Nojo-jo. This castle just closed as we got there so I took a couple of lovely photos of the moat. Very nice moat....
Kinkakuji Temple. It's gold plated! There's another temple called Ginkakuji which means Silver Temple but it's not actually made out of silver. When they built it they wanted it to be silver plated but they didn't have the yen to make it happen. The name must suffice. Needless to say I didn't see that one, lol.
This is Fushimi Inari-Taisha. There were thousands of these orange torii gates. The names of the donors are written on them. This was my favorite place in Kyoto.
These are little wolf heads that people have drawn on or written on. I think they're supposed to be good luck charms.
The entire path up the hill was covered in torii gates. There are actually gates that have rotted. You can only see the black bases but we came across a crew painting a replacement.
Once the orange paint dries then they can paint the donor's name in black.
So beautiful! Maybe I liked this place the best because it reminded me of the floating torii gate at Miyajima which is so close to home in Hiroshima. ;)
Hello! My name is Jessica but if you’re reading this blog you probably already know that. Anyway, I’m fresh out of college and ready for an adventure halfway across the world. Well, I was fresh out of college… If I graduated 8 months ago am I still fresh out of college? I guess it doesn’t matter. What does matter is that I’ll be spending a year in Hiroshima, Japan teaching English. So check back here often and we’ll see how that goes!
