So this whole Japan thing has gone much better than I was expecting. I don't mean that I expected it to be awful but I expected it to be more difficult to adjust. I still have a loooong way to go but everyone has been so awesome. And I have several friends already! lol.
Yesterday I got into Hiroshima and my apartment is waaay bigger than I expected. I can actually have people over. I rode the shinkansen (bullet train) here to Hiroshima and my manager and outgoing NET met me.
The first thing they asked: Are you hungover?
Um.... No.....? Do I tell the truth? Haha, truth is I wasn't actually hung over despite the fact that the dinner before was pretty...ahem...celebratory. Next question: You can tell us, didn't you drink last night and go out? Answer: Um, yes, yes I did and surprisingly I am not hungover.
Anyway I am settling into my apartment and last night I met up with a bunch of the other teachers here in the city. I kind of live in the outskirts of Hiroshima but it doesn't take long at all to get to the where everything is. There are actually tons of cute shops and little restaurants and a foreign foods store where they have tortillas. Tortillas! And last night I took the streetcar home by myself and had didn't even get lost.
Today my manager showed me around a bit. I now have a cell phone and internet, which took forever to get but still well worth it. Instead of getting a modem I just have one of those usb thingys so no installation required. I mean I did have to install it but I did it myself without having one of those technicians come all the way out to my apartment.
Also, I have to buzz people in to the building when they come to visit me. Just like Seinfield!
In addition to my futon there is also a couch that turns into a bed. In fact, it's kind of what we would call a futon in America... go figure.
I'm so excited to go exploring next weekend. Tomorrow I have to go to work and see all of my student. Side note: my manager told me that everyone thought I looked Japanese in my photos. Then she said that she could still see it seeing me in person. So maybe I won't be getting stared at as much as I thought I would be. Or maybe not.
And I have a name stamp so now my name means peace. The manager couldn't find a good kanji translation for my name so she said the Japanese word for peace sounds similar. That's all for now. I'll try to take pictures and upload them later.
